It is estimated that one in every twelve people suffers from
restless legs, which is also known as
Ekbom's Syndrome. While
some individuals, experience restless legs as only a minor
annoyance that occasionally interrupts a restful evening, for
many others the inability to get adequate rest or sleep, as a
result of RLS, can have a dramatic impact on their lives.
Although Restless legs is not in itself a life threatening
illness, the effects of long periods of sleep deprivation caused
by restless legs can be very serious indeed. It is now known
that inadequate sleep not only effects the way we feel and
function, dramatically reducing our ability to solve problems
and deal with life, but it is also extremely detrimental to our
overall health.
In addition to this,
insomnia sufferers frequently have to
contend with severe mood swings, anxiety and cravings, as their
system desperately looks for something that will take the place
of sleep and allow them to feel OK. This makes people who are
sleep deprived, four times more likely to suffer from obesity or
alcohol abuse than someone with a normal sleep pattern.
Restless legs is thought to be hereditary and has been
attributed to a decrease in dopamine levels that occurs during
the evening and at night, and until now there has not been a
truly effective
treatment for Restless Leg Syndrome. Thankfully,
