How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture is based on over 3000 years of clinical observation. However, until very recently, little was known as to how it actually works.

An awful lot of scientific research has been carried out in recent years into acupuncture, a great deal of which was carried out by ourselves when we were developing this product. Please see our Technology page for more information on that research.
As science and technology is advancing, we are beginning to be able to accurately measure more and more of the tiny changes that take place inside the human body, which govern how it functions. Research is showing that acupuncture can effect virtually every system in the body and that acupuncture even has immediate effect on neurological activity in the brain.

Although much has been discovered recently, it is still unclear as to exactly how acupuncture produces all of the far reaching physiological effects that it does.

However, listed below, are some of the most recent finding and theories on how acupuncture works.

Regulation of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS).
There have been many studies that show that acupuncture can alter the levels of ANS related chemicals such as neurotransmitters and neurohormones that effect all our unconscious body functions such as breathing rate, blood pressure, blushing, anxiety and anger responses.

The Opioid pain systems
The largest area of research has been into the effects of acupuncture on pain, and it has been found that several types of opioids appear to be released into the central nervous system during acupuncture treatment, thereby dramatically reducing the level of pain experienced.

Increasing the Conduction of electromagnetic signals.
Acupuncture points have been shown to be strategic conductors of electromagnetic signals in our body. They have also been shown to be more electrically active than surrounding tissues.
